A Taste of Tapas

Have you ever been undecided about what to order from a menu as so much appeals to you? Could you happily eat a small portion of at least three starters, and then two of the main courses sound delicious, and then there are those decadent desserts tempting your tastebuds. Is that why the Spanish invented Tapas? At the heart of Spanish tradition the daily ritual of eating Tapas accompanied by a chilled glass of sherry is enjoyed with typical Mediterranean passion! Served both at lunchtime when shade from the scorching sun is sought or as the day begins to cool. There will be an exciting, eclectic mix of tapas to tempt you. Fabulous flavours, clashing colours, hot and cold magnificent morsels impossible to resist.

Imagine humble marinated olives, salty almonds, bruschetta bursting with tantalising toppings. Think of fish and seafood, light meaty morsels, vibrant vegetables, piquant salads, salsas and divine dips. Even though traditionally Tapas do not include desserts, we will create some miniature masterpieces of the sweet variety.

    Tapas originated in Andalucía where the long summer days and warm evenings merge into one.  The Spanish are very fond of Fino Sherry and history has it that a slice of bread (forming a lid) would be placed over the glass to keep the flies out!!
    The word lid translates to tapas and the tapas with its array of toppings as we know today have evolved from there.  In some regions of Spain the Tapas are mainly bread based but in other areas lots of small tasty dishes are served.
    In Spain Tapas are served at lunchtime with a drink or two and then again in the early evening to bridge the long gap between lunch and the Spanish late, late dinner!! Many areas of Spain have an abundance of Tapas bars (each having their own speciality) and a Tapas tour makes an enjoyable and sociable evening spent in an informal atmosphere while nibbling away on little bites of intense flavour. It is a great way to try lots of new and exciting flavours.  Let us hope that we have some Mediterranean sunshine to go with our Tapas at the Spinney!!
